CNC tending: interfaces and recovery

Define robot-machine communication, expected states and recovery before stating unattended throughput.

A machine-tending robot needs to know when it may enter the machine, which part it carries and whether the requested action is complete. Interface engineering defines the necessary information and decisions, including after a stop, uncertain grip or batch change.

Inventory available facilities

Record the CNC model, version, automation options and authorised access. Obtain applicable drawings and interface documentation. A spare network port or input does not establish that robot communication is provided or that a safety function may be connected there.

FANUC, for example, describes a ROBODRILL package with a robot interface and associated equipment. That offer documents a manufacturer configuration. It does not establish that the same functions exist on an installed machine or another brand.

Name states and their owner

For each exchange, define who produces the information, who reads it and what it means. “Machine available”, “machining complete” and “clamping confirmed” describe different conditions. A request is not a confirmation. Also define what invalidates information after a fault or communication loss.

The interface document connects these states to the planned sequence. Addresses and protocols are then selected for the actual equipment. Process-control signals and safety functions are identified separately, with their design and validation responsibilities.

Describe the cycle with the actual part

Define preparation, unloading, gripping and loading operations. Associate each step with preconditions, the expected result and the response when that result is missing. Door, clamping, cleaning and inspection times belong in the assessed cycle.

Also check raw-part presentation and finished-part removal. A second pick or conveyor wait can change robot availability for another machine. Arm capacity does not establish that operating arrangement.

Decide what remains known after a stop

Recovery needs the physical state: part in the gripper, part clamped in the machine or empty station. After power loss, some information may need verification again. The project defines recovery cases and decisions reserved for an authorised operator.

Distinguish a production stop, a communication fault and activation of a safety function. They do not justify one universal procedure. Selected arrangements are assessed with those responsible for the cell and checked in a prepared test environment.

Test exchanges that may be missing

The protocol covers missing confirmations, unverified grips, machine unavailability and agreed format changes. Trials are defined without disabling protection. For each case, state the initial condition, introduced event, expected response and evidence to retain.

Check both the physical action and associated information. A green screen is insufficient when the part is not in the reported state. Results identify cases actually exercised and those remaining for another test campaign.

Link versions to recovery documentation

Handover includes the interface document, sequences, identified backups and procedures covered by trials. Define who may change each program and how changes are recorded. A program copy without its installation revision can leave necessary parameters outside the file.

Vanguard scopes these elements with the customer and relevant suppliers. Scope distinguishes programming, machine changes, validation and training. Performance is then confirmed using agreed parts and conditions, with remaining reservations stated.

Common questions

Points to clarify.

Is an Ethernet connection sufficient?

It provides a communication medium. The protocol, exchanged information, validity conditions and permitted functions still need defining.

Can every fault be followed by automatic recovery?

That depends on the cell state and its assessment. Some cases require physical verification or an operator decision defined in the project.

Must the existing machine be replaced?

Access, interfaces and possible changes are reviewed before that decision. Feasibility and responsibilities are confirmed before selecting an architecture.
