A method for a robotic cell project

Six steps connecting production requirements to trials, interfaces, acceptance and cell recovery.

A robotics project advances when decisions rest on verified data. This method describes the work and decision points Vanguard proposes to define with the operator. Final scope depends on the process, existing equipment and agreed responsibilities.

Define a boundary and a verifiable objective

The initial need becomes an operation description: inputs, outputs, retained manual work and required checks. We define part families, operating conditions and how to observe the objective. A desired rate needs a measurement boundary, part references and conditions.

Scoping also assigns responsibilities: part data, machine modifications, utility supply and process approval. It identifies stakeholders and decisions affecting scope. Unconfirmed assumptions remain visible instead of becoming performance commitments.

Resolve unknowns through targeted trials

The first question may concern gripping a carton, recognising a reflective surface or reaching a joint. We select trials that can resolve it using identified samples. The intended output is a documented decision: proceed, change the presentation or discard the option.

Trials retain their conditions and limitations. Success with a well-presented part does not prove performance across all production variation. The report records references, settings, observations and missing data. Those findings guide arm and peripheral-equipment selection.

Design the assembly and its interfaces

The layout combines robot, tool and workpiece envelopes with neighbouring equipment. We examine approaches, batch changes, access and maintenance tasks. Selection retains the exact reference and documented conditions; variants are not combined to create a fictional capability.

An interface agreement describes states and exchanges with each machine. Risk assessment and protection develop alongside the design. Required supplier documents are listed. Design review makes outstanding points explicit before the relevant implementation work begins.

Program the sequence and recovery

Programming translates the sequence into observable states: waiting for a part, confirmed grip, available station, completed operation or fault. Recipes and checks correspond to selected references. Motion is verified with the intended tools and parts, then checked against peripheral behaviour.

Recovery is prepared alongside the normal cycle. Power loss, a moved part or a machine fault can desynchronise software and physical equipment. We define checks and permitted actions before restarting. Special operating modes remain distinct from automatic operation in this preparation.

Accept against a shared protocol

The acceptance protocol identifies parts, checks, configurations and faults to exercise. Integrator trials may prepare acceptance, while site trials check the cell against installed interfaces and actual conditions. Both stages are recorded with any reservations.

A fault observation should identify the test, result and correction. Unverified points remain identified. Criteria also address documentation and intervention arrangements. Automatic operation alone, or a component marking, does not describe acceptance of the complete assembly.

Hand over a configuration and prepare for change

Handover includes the agreed documentation, relevant versions, backups and instructions suited to users. We define maintenance tasks, monitoring points and conditions for requesting support. A backup is operationally useful only when its content and restoration procedure are known.

A new format, different tool or machine modification may change the original assumptions. Change requests therefore describe what changes and which trials need repeating. The cell retains a usable history for diagnosis, recovery and planning the next modification.
